Vegan smoothie recipes are everywhere on the internet these days and I am a massive fan of a morning smoothie myself. Recently, probably in the past three months or so, I’ve been having a vegan smoothie for breakfast 5 out of 7 days of the week and I would credit this addition to my diet as one of the ways I have lost so much weight. If you get the ingredients right then a decent vegan smoothie will fill you up until lunchtime.
I’m not an advocate of losing weight just for the sake of being thinner but I was in a place where I felt unhealthy and unhappy with my body and quite at a loss as to what to do about it. So, I decided to start making small, easy changes to my food intake and lifestyle and worked up to where I am today, which is about 20lbs down and full of energy. This fitness and lifestyle journey is still really in a new and delicate state for me but it has without a doubt changed my outlook to, well, everything and for the better.
Smoothies of course are just a small part of a lifestyle change but they are a brilliant place to start when you have no idea what to do. The problem with vegan smoothies is that the online recipes are often complicated or full of exotic and/or expensive ingredients and that puts me right off.
I need life to be as easy as possible and so I created this post to be easy to follow if you want to recreate the recipes below. Nobody has time for baobab after all (what even is it?!)
You might remember in my pre-vegan days that I worked with a brand called thyme – a company who deliver fresh, simple, frozen meals to your doorstep and take all the hard work out of your week for you. As a working parent, I was over the moon with their service and now I’m pretty excited to tell you that they are doing smoothie box deliveries too! It’s like they read my mind and answered my prayers because honestly, I’m just too busy to mess about chopping, prepping and designing the ingredients for tasty smoothies. I’m incredibly busy, as I’m sure are you, and I don’t have time for any faffing in the mornings.
You can win your own smoothie variety box, (which includes a selection of 30 smoothies from up to 14 flavours) by entering the competition here and then check out the recipes below for a few ideas of how best to serve them up.
The service from thyme was as fantastic as last time with a simple, easy to use website and the box arriving exactly when and where it was supposed to with eco-friendly packaging that could keep the ingredients frozen for several hours (handy if you aren’t in when it’s delivered).
Inside, I found lots of individual portions of smoothie ingredients, already chopped and ready to just stick in my Ninja blender. All I had to do was pull out a packet from the freezer and add my choice of milk or water and blend.
Now as I said, I am a big fan of a smoothie but sometimes I just want to eat my breakfast instead of merely drinking it. I need the crunch and the munch on those hungrier days and so I started experimenting with smoothie bowls and found that they are the perfect antidote to a grumbling tum.
So here are four of my favourites – packed full of antioxidants and vitamins, these smoothie bowls will pack a punch to your morning and leave you with a full stomach and a ton of energy.
Absofruitly vegan smoothie bowl
My vegan smoothie bowls are hit with all of the family (even the non-vegan members!) and can be made to suit any palette – this one is probably the biggest hit so far.
The absofruitly nutriburst sachet from thyme contains the right portion of frozen strawberry, pineapple and kiwi for one person and I simply add the following ingredients:
- 200ml unsweetened almond milk
- 1 scoop of vegan vanilla protein
- 2 tbsp chia seeds
- 1 chopped banana (to decorate)
- 1/2 a cup of sliced strawberry (to decorate)
- 1/2 cup blackberries (to decorate)
- 1 sliced kiwi (to decorate)
Energy currant vegan smoothie bowl
- Energy currant thyme nutriburst sachet – blackcurrant, strawberry and rasberry
- 200 ml cashew nut milk
- 1/2 cup goji berries
- 1/2 cup of mixed, crushed nuts (Brazil nuts are excellent here)
- 1 tbsp desiccated coconut
- 1 cup sliced mixed fruit
Blitz the first two ingredients together in your blender and then decorate with the remaining ingredients.
Cococabana vegan smoothie bowl
This one is great if you have a particularly busy day ahead and need something extra filling.
- Cococabana nutriburst sachet
- 200 ml oat milk
- 1 scoop vegan vanilla protein
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- 1 cup of blueberries
- 1 cup of rasberries
- 1 tbsp goji berries
