And it’s not to lose weight. Nope. Quite simply my New Year’s resolution for 2018 is this:
to get organised
Groundbreaking I am sure you will all agree…
It might be just me but sometimes I play the keeping up with the jones’ game like you would not believe. Wherever I turn I am confronted by kick-ass, balsy women running empires both at home and in the workplace. And that’s great. For them.
Coz, you see I don’t really fit into that niche of kick-assdom. I’m still in a relatively junior grade at work and mostly winging it with my house full of offspring at home. The result of this was that I spent 2017 kinda wishing I was bigger and better at everything and sadly, also hating on myself for all of the mediocre things I do and am.
I know. I know. Boohoo poor me. But this is my blog and I’m allowed to wallow for like, a second.
So anyway, after all the wallowing (and ice-cream eating), I sat down to give some thought to my New Years resolutions.
I love me a resolution, a plan, a set of goals – whatever you want to call it. I’m all over this new year trend. Particularly if there are lists involved…
But like I said, I am a mum and I am always split between my work and personal life as a result. It isn’t possible for me to devote the hours and enthusiasm to my job as my colleagues do. I simply don’t have the time.
So I needed to find something I could do and do it really well this year. It’s important for my self-esteem, mental health yaddah yaddah yaddah.
So I came up with the idea of professionalising motherhood. I probably didn’t actually come up with it per se but it popped into my head all by its self so I’m running with it. And apologies for the really rather sexist tone this blog post is about to take but in my house, it’s the woman who does the running of the home. It’s not really sexist – more like a fact.
Child-rearing, meal-planning, cooking, cleaning, shopping and running of the house is down to me. My other half helps and is super-duper practical (good job too as DIY isn’t one of my things either) but ultimately, I do the lions share on a normal working week because I work 22 hours in the office to his 45. And that’s the way I like it for the most part to be really honest.
But inspired by my mother and mother-in-law to be who have both raised lovely families and have beautiful homes, I have decided to really organise these areas of my life and treat motherhood and um, wifedom (????) as a professional role just like any other career.
And that’s it in a nutshell. I ‘m going to spend 2018 organising and renovating my home, room by room, so that it is both functional for a family of six and cosy and homely. I am going to set up routines and systems in place for all of the cleaning / washing / cooking / nagging that needs to be done and I will be documenting it both here on the blog and over on my YouTube channel where you crazy people seem to love a speed clean or two.
I’m not going to pretend like I have it all figured out yet because I don’t BUT by the end of 2018, my only goal is to have a smooth running household and a much more organised approach to motherhood.
Who’s with me?
